At Bobcares, we offer solutions for every query, big and small, as a part of our WordPress Support Services.

Let’s take a look at how our WP Support Team helped our customers with converting existing WordPress sites to a network of sites with the Multisite feature.

How to Convert Existing WordPress to Multisite

The Multisite feature in WordPress is a popular feature among websites of all sizes. It allows us to create multiple virtual websites from a single WP installation. In other words, the Multisite feature allows us to turn our website into a network of multiple websites.

We can convert an existing WordPress site to Multisite and get access to all network websites via the WP admin bar. However, these websites have to be on a single domain, or on a subdomain of the main domain.

Convert Existing WordPress to Multisite

Let’s take a look at how to convert existing WordPress sites with the Multisite feature:

  1. To begin with, we have to prepare WordPress by backing up the database and files. Additionally, we have to deactivate all active plugins.
  2. Next, we have to define multisite in the wp-config.php file by adding the following line:
    define( 'WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true );

    This enables the Network Setup item in the Tools menu.

  3. Then, head to Create a Network of WordPress Sites via the Network Setup option. This opens a screen where we have to enter network details.
  4. After that, enable the network as per the instructions on the Create a Network of WordPress Sites screen.
  5. Next, head to My Sites from the WordPress toolbar. Then navigate to Network Admin > Dashboard to configure the network options.
  6. Finally, activate the plugins one by one and test if they work on each site.

The above steps will help us create a network of websites with the Multisite feature.
