Let us learn more about how to create the 2 node cluster proxmox with the assistance of our Promax support services at Bobcares.
Proxmox Cluster
We’re going to make a Proxmox cluster out of two physical servers, node1 and node2. We can also utilize two separate servers for the cluster, such as a powerful huge one as my main node1 and a minor, lightweight old one as my node2 fallback cluster.
This allows us to have High Availability on the most critical VMs such as DNS service, pi hole, reverse proxy, unifi controller, and others. High-demanding VMs, such as Plex, are simply not configured for HA migration, ensuring that the smaller node is not overloaded.
We will first construct a Proxmox Cluster using the two proxmox servers we have. We must ensure the proper installation of node1 and node2, particularly the node we want to join into a cluster; in this case, node2 should be a new Proxmox install.
Create a Proxmox Cluster with 2 nodes
Configuration:1
To make a cluster, go to the web GUI of the MAIN cluster, node1 for us, and click on “Datacenter”, then “Cluster”. Then, to create the cluster, select “Create Cluster”.
This will open a popup where we may enter the preferred cluster name and pick the LAN device for Cluster communication. This should always be a distinct LAN device on its own isolated cluster communication sub-network, rather than the LAN interface via which we run everything else.
Click on the “Create” button to initiate the build of the cluster. This should redirect us to the cluster overview page.
Then, on the cluster overview page, select “Join Information,” which will bring up a popup with all the information we need to add the second node, node2, to the cluster. We can easily join by clicking “Copy information” and going over to the node2 web GUI.
This is now happening on the EMPTY node2, which we want to join the newly formed cluster. Go to “Datacenter” -> “Cluster” and then “Join Cluster” on the Webinterface.
This will open the below window, where we will copy and paste the crucial information from the node1 Join Information tab. It will auto-populate the tab with information from cluster 1.
After this, we need to do input the admin / root password for the user on node2 and pick the LAN interface over which node2 should connect with node1.
Again, this should be a separate network that is only used for backend communication. Then click “JOIN Cluster”. This marks the first set of steps in creating 2 node cluster proxmox.
Configuration:2
On the webinterface, we will now lose connection to node2. Return to the node1 webinterface, and node2 will appear fairly fast.
The cluster list on the main node now shows two new devices, node1 (master) and node2 (slave). This step concludes the final step in 2 node cluster proxmox.
The purpose of this configuration is to give some redundancy and resilience in the event that one of the nodes fails in some way. We can also back up, snapshot, and restore the virtual system more easily as necessary.
Having the virtual machine replicated allows us to easily transfer it to the other node. However, one significant limitation of this configuration is that automatic failover does not operate in a two-node cluster.
A quorum is required by Proxmox, and a quorum is required before any automatic HA migrations are initiated.
