Determine IP Address Information

We have to determine the IP addresses of both:

  • pfSense Router
  • Pi Hole VM or Device

Before beginning make sure to have assigned a static IP address for the Pi Hole server.

Configure pfSense Router with Pi Hole

From the pfSense control panel, which is located at https://10.0.0.1 in my case. Please navigate to System General Setup DNS Server Settings from the menu above.

We have to make sure to have added the Pi Hole IP address as a new DNS Server which is 10.0.0.100 in this case. In addition to that, untick both of those options we will be able to find at the bottom.

  • Allow DHCP/PPP on the WAN to override the DNS server list.
  • Do not utilize the DNS Forwarder/DNS Resolver as the firewall’s DNS server.

Next, navigate to Services DNS Resolver General Settings, where we will discover settings relating to the pfSense native DNS resolver; ensure that all of the following items are checked:

  • Enable DNS resolver
  • Enable DNSSEC Support
  • And activate the Forwarding Mode

That’s it; now we can move on to the final stage, which is to ensure everything is working properly.

Ensure Pi Hole is Working with pfsense

Okay, now we can go to the Pi Hole admin panel, which is hosted at http://10.0.0.100/admin/ in my instance, and then we should open a web browser on any of the pfSense router client devices, try browsing any website, and see what’s occurring on the Pi Hole admin panel overview.

If the live information about the DNS queries that the Pi Hole server receives when surfing the web on the client devices confirms that everything is configured properly, everything is OK.
