How to activate Flexible SSL Cloudflare for WordPress

Flexible SSL can be described as an encryption service. It is available free of charge to all Cloudflare users. In other words, we do not have to purchase an SSL certificate in order to use Flexible SSL.

  1. In order to activate Flexible SSL in Cloudflare, the first step is setting up Cloudflare.
  2. First, we have to sign up for Cloudflare and then choose the free plan. After that, we have to follow the onscreen instructions in order to add our domain name.
  3. Then, after the nameservers are changed are done propagating, we have to log into Cloudflare and select Crypto.
  4. Now, select Flexible as seen in the image below:

  5. Next, we have to prepare the site for SSL. This includes installing and activating two plugins, namely, Cloudflare Flexible SSL and WordPress HTTPS.

The former prevents the redirect loop issue. After installing the WordPress HTTPS plugin, click the new HTTPS link in the main WordPress menu, and then modify the “Proxy” setting to “Yes.”

Configuring WordPress to use Flexible SSL

  1. Now, it is time to test our site. Our experts would like to point out that Cloudflare takes up to 24 hours to issue the Flexible SSL certificate. We can check the status by visiting the HTTPS version of the site. For example https://oursite.com.

In case we come across a security error or a cPanel 404 page, it indicates that the certificate has not been issued yet.

  2. Once the site starts loading over HTTPS, we have to head back to Cloudflare and choose Page Rules.
  3. After that, we have to click “Create Page Rule.”
  4. Then, enter the URL of the WordPress site in the first box as seen here: http://oursite.com/*.
  5. Next, select “Always Use HTTPS from the drop-down box.
  6. Finally, click “Save and Deploy.”

Now, we have to head to the General Settings page in WordPress and edit the Site Address to https://.

And we are all done! Our site will now be up and running on HTTPS.
