apache2ctl enable site command | An Introduction

The apache2ctl enable site command is used in the Apache web server to enable a website or virtual host configuration file.

apache2ctl enable site command | An Introduction

In Apache, we can run multiple websites on the same server via virtual hosts. Furthermore, each virtual host has a configuration file. This file contains the website’s domain name, document root, log files, and other settings.

In order to enable a virtual host configuration file, we have to create the file in the Apache “sites-available” directory.

This file contains the configuration settings for the website we plan on hosting. Once we create the file, we can enable it with the “apache2ctl enable site” command accompanied by the virtual host configuration file.

For instance, if we have a virtual host configuration file named “webpage1.com.conf” in the “sites-available” directory, we can enable it with the following command:

sudo apache2ctl enable site webpage1.com.conf

The above command creates a symbolic link from the virtual host configuration file in the “sites-available” directory to the “sites-enabled” directory. Furthermore, it tells Apache to load and use the configuration for the website.

Once we enable the site, we have to restart the Apache service for the changes to take effect.

sudo service apache2 restart

Once we restart the Apache web server, the changes we made will come into effect to the virtual host configuration file. In other words, our website will be accessible via the domain name in the virtual host configuration file after restarting Apache.
