Learn how to enable Port Mirror in Proxmox. Our Proxmox Support team is here to help you with your questions and concerns.

Proxmox Enable Port Mirror | Guide

Port mirroring is a networking feature. It lets us copy network traffic from one port on a network switch to another port for monitoring or analysis purposes.

Proxmox Enable Port Mirror | Guide

Proxmox VE usually uses the physical network infrastructure to offer port mirroring capabilities.

Let’s take a look at how port mirroring is enabled with these steps:

  1. Port mirroring is often configured at the level of our network switch or router. Additionally, we need a network switch that supports port mirroring or port spanning features.
  2. Then, log in to the management interface of the network switch. This is often done via a web browser or CLI.
  3. Next, we have to determine the source port from which we want to mirror network traffic.
  4. Now, choose a destination port where the mirrored traffic will be sent. We have to specify the destination port for monitoring.
  5. Then, find the port mirroring or port spanning configuration section on the network switch. We can find this under the “Monitoring” or “Port Mirroring” menu.
  6. Next, we have to create a mirror session and mention the source and destination ports.
  7. Furthermore, we may have to choose if we want to mirror traffic from certain VLANs or all VLANs on the source port.
  8. Now, activate or enable the mirror session to start copying traffic from the source port(s) to the destination port.
  9. At this point, we have to connect a monitoring device to the destination port to capture and analyze the mirrored traffic.
  10. Remember to disable or deactivate the port mirroring session on the network switch when we no longer need to monitor the traffic.
