Exploring NoVNC on Kali Linux: Command Line
Recently, one of our customers preferred a temporary solution rather than setting up Apache Guacamole as the remote gateway.
In this scenario, our experts recommended NoVNC. It offers a lighter approach and has less overhead as it offers fewer services. This is great when we need a quick “one-off connection” solution.
Although Apache Guacamole offers a comprehensive solution, there are times when a temporary or simpler approach is more suitable.
Today we are going to explore an ad hoc solution using NoVNC on Kali Linux.
How to Install NoVNC and x11vnc
- Start the VNC Session
- Run NoVNC
- Enable SSH
- Establish a Remote Connection
Let’s take a look at each step in detail:
- To begin with, we have to make sure to update and install the needed packages. In this case, we have chosen x11vnc as the VNC solution, but we can switch it for any VNC service as per our needs. However the support may vary for different services.
kali@kali:~$ sudo apt update
kali@kali:~$ sudo apt install -y novnc x11vnc
- Then, it is time to start the VNC Session. To maintain a secure connection, we have to run the VNC session on loopback, bypassing x11vnc’s in-built HTTP function that requires Java.
kali@kali:~$ x11vnc -display :0 -autoport -localhost -nopw -bg -xkb -ncache -ncache_cr -quiet -forever
- Now, verify the VNC port in use as seen below:
kali@kali:~$ ss -antp | grep vnc
- Next, start NoVNC, this will open port 8081/TCP:
kali@kali:~$ /usr/share/novnc/utils/novnc_proxy --listen 8081 --vnc localhost:5900
- We can ensure the service is running by checking the port:
kali@kali:~$ ss -antp | grep vnc
- Furthermore, enable SSH for added security:
kali@kali:~$ sudo systemctl enable ssh –now
- Then, on the remote machine, SSH into the Kali setup. We have to enable port forwarding first.
$ ssh kali@192.168.13.37 -L 8081:localhost:8081
How to Install NoVNC using Aptitude
If we prefer aptitude, we have to install it on Kali Linux first and then proceed to install NoVNC:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude -y install novnc
How to Uninstall NoVNC
We can easily remove NoVNC from our Kali Linux system with one of the following options:
- Remove only the NoVNC package:
sudo apt-get remove novnc
- Uninstall NoVNC and its dependencies:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove novnc
- Remove NoVNC configurations and data:
sudo apt-get -y purge novnc
- Remove NoVNC configurations, data, and all dependencies:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge novnc
