S3FS DigitalOcean Spaces | An Introduction

by | Mar 7, 2024

Let’s look into the details of using s3fs in DigitalOcean Spaces. Bobcares, as a part of our DigitalOcean Managed Service offers solutions to every query that comes our way.

How to use s3fs in DigitalOcean Spaces?

With the help of the FUSE tool s3fs, we can mount cloud storage services like DigitalOcean Spaces on the Linux computer as a file system. We can use conventional file system operations to communicate with the DigitalOcean Spaces buckets and objects when using s3fs. An overview of the system is given as follows:

1. Setting up s3fs on the Linux computer is the first step. Before the set-up of S3FS, we must set up dependencies like FUSE and the S3FS package.

2. We must set up S3FS to function with DigitalOcean Spaces after this step. In order to obtain this, we must supply the endpoint URL, the secret key, and the access key for DigitalOcean Spaces. We should also make a credentials file to safely keep the secret key and access key.

3. DigitalOcean Spaces bucket can be mounted as a file system on a particular directory by using the s3fs command after it has been set up. As an example, the following command can be used to mount a bucket called “your-bucket” to the /mnt/s3 directory:

s3fs digitalocean spaces

By mounting the DigitalOcean Spaces bucket to the designated directory, we can use ordinary file system commands to interact with the contents of the bucket.

4. Once mounted, we may work on the DigitalOcean Spaces bucket using a variety of file system operations. Creating directories, copying files, reading and writing files, erasing objects, and controlling permissions are all included in this.

5. The fusermount command can be used to unmount the DigitalOcean Spaces bucket once we’re through using it. For instance, we would use the following command to unmount the /mnt/s3 directory:

s3fs digitalocean spaces

By unmounting it from the specified directory, this operation stops the DigitalOcean Spaces bucket from functioning as a file system.

Conclusion

We can easily manage and get the data by interacting with the Spaces buckets and objects using standard file system operations when we use s3fs with DigitalOcean Spaces.
