Causes for Hyper-V ubuntu network is unreachable

This error occurs when there is an issue with the network switch or the network configuration in the server.

One of the common reasons for the error is because the virtual switch is not selected in the network adapter.

Another reason for the error is because the network configuration is incorrect or network service is down.

Let’s discuss how our Support Engineers resolve the error for our customers.

How we fix Hyper-V ubuntu network is unreachable

Recently one of the customers contacted us with the error. On checking, we found that the virtual switch configuration was incorrect. Let’s discuss how our Support Engineers resolve the error for our customers.

Hyper-V virtual switch network incorrect

First, we log in to the Hyper-V manager.

Then we select the Virtual machine.

On the right pane, we click on Settings.

Then we select the Network Adapter option in the settings.

The Virtual switch was in a Not connected state.

So, in the Virtual switch drop-down list, we select the correct switch.

After the change, we were able to SSH to the Ubuntu server.

Ubuntu Network configuration incorrect

First, we log in to the Hyper-V manager.

Then we log in to the server via console.

We check the IP configuration using the command

ifconfig

We found that the IP configuration was incorrect.

Thus we edit the file in the server and correct the configuration.

The file is present at the location

/etc/network/interfaces

Finally, we restart the network service using the command.

systemctl restart networking.service

Thus we were able to SSH to the ubuntu server.

Network service down in Ubuntu

One of the common reasons for the network unreachable is the network service is down in the server.

Thus we log in to the server via console from Hyper-V manager. Then we start the network service back.

Once we start the service the issue with the network is resolved.
