Do you want to enter the Supermicro BIOS? We can help you with it.

BIOS initiates the booting of the server. And to change it, we have to enter the BIOS using a single key or two keys.

At Bobcares, we often get requests regarding Supermicro servers as a part of our Server Management Services.

Today, let’s see how our Support Engineers help our customers to enter the BIOS.

Explore more about Supermicro and BIOS

BIOS stands for Basic Input Output System. It is software that is mainly stored on a small memory chip on the motherboard.

To boot from CD or DVD device, we need to change the boot sequence priority over a hard drive.

Thus, we need to enter the BIOS to change the option to CD-ROM.

Let’s discuss how our Support Engineers enter the BIOS to change the boot order.

How to enter Supermicro BIOS?

Recently one of our customers contacted us saying that he cannot enter the BIOS. For this, we had to change the boot order to load from the CD.

Now let’s discuss how our Support Engineers enter BIOS and change the boot order.

First, we determine the Supermicro motherboard.

Then we determine if the server is UEFI or BIOS. The easiest way to find if the server is BIOS or UEFI is to check for the below folder.

/sys/firmware/efi

If the folder is present then we can determine that it is UEFI. If the folder is not present then it is in BIOS mode. Here, in the below screenshot we checked for the folder /sys/firmware/efi and received an error as a result. This confirms it to be a BIOS.

Once we determine the mode. We then reboot the server to enter the BIOS.

For X8 boards we can enter the BIOS with the below key.

F4 or DEL or F11

For X9boards with BIOS, we can enter the BIOS using the below key

F4

To enter the remote console on X9boards with UEFI, we press the below keys at the same time.

"ESC" + "-"

After entering the BIOS, we change the boot order to CD-ROM Drive.
