At Bobcares, we often receive requests to fix the DNN related errors as a part of our Server Management Services.

Today, let’s explore more on this error and see how our Support Engineers fix the Persona bar.

What is Persona Bar?

Persona Bar is a Control Panel in the DNN which allows controlling all the operations in the DNN.

The Persona Bar varies according to the product version and the roles. We can differentiate the roles according to the permission granted to the user. The different roles are:

  • Host
  • Admin
  • Content Manager
  • Content Editor
  • Community Manager

The permission granted to each of the roles is different. For example, the Host role has permission to access all the menu items, but the Community manager can access only the features required to manage the community-related aspects of the site.

DNN Persona Bar Not Displaying

Causes and Fixes for missing Persona Bar in DNN

If the DNN Persona bar disappears, we cannot do any operations in the DNN. Thus, we have to fix the problem as soon as possible.

Mostly the Persona bar disappear after the DNN upgrade to the latest version.

Recently, one of our customers approached us saying that the Persona Bar not displaying after the DNN upgrade.

Let’s now see how our Support Engineers checked the error in detail and fixed it.

1. Check if any modules causing the problem.

Initially, we check the Portal logs to find if any modules are causing the problem.

So if we find any faulty module in the Portal logs, then we upgrade the module to the latest version after taking the backup of the site.

2. Change the web.config file

Web.config file is the configuration file which manages the various operation of the website. The persona bar can disappear due to conflict of version in the module’s web.config and version in main website web.config file.

We can fix the Persona bar problem by changing the web.config file.

  • Initially, we take the backup of the website.
  • Then we replace the web.config of the upgraded site with the fresh web.config file from the corresponding DNN version.
  • After that, we update the connection string in the web.config file.

That fixes the problem in most cases.

3. Recreate the folder

If the problem still persists, another method is to delete the PersonaBar folder from the backend.

C:\...\httpdocs\DesktopModules\Admin\Dnn.PersonaBar

Here, after taking the backup of the site, we delete the Dnn.PersonaBar folder from the specified path. Then we load the DNN site again. Loading the website recreate the deleted folder again.

Finally, we restart the application pool of the website. After a website refresh, the persona bar appears again.

The changes in DNN configuration often results in new errors. Therefore, in all the above three cases, we perform the operations only after taking the backup of the website. Further, to make the changes effective, we restart the application pool at the end.
