When to upgrade SolusVM to a new version

If you have been getting notifications from the SolusVM indicating that your current version is outdated, it is time for an upgrade. Our Support Techs have put together this tutorial to get you started.

Prerequisites for upgrading SolusVM to a new version

Before we set out to upgrade your SolusVM to the latest version, you need to satisfy the following criteria:

  • First, make sure that the OS version installed on the server is CentOS 6 or CentOS 7.
  • Next, ensure that the architecture of the node is 64 bit.
    # arch
    x86_64
  • The final condition is that the current software stack includes PHP 5.6 as well as svmstack-nginx server:
    # php -v
    PHP 5.6.30 (cli) (built: Mar 21 2017 12:59:30)
Copyright (c) 1997-2016 The PHP Group
Zend Engine v2.6.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2016 Zend Technologies
with the ionCube PHP Loader (enabled) + Intrusion Protection from ioncube24.com (unconfigured) v6.0.9, Copyright (c) 2002-2016, by ionCube Ltd.
    # service svmstack-nginx status
    nginx (pid 136935) is running...

However, if the PHP version is different or you do not have svmstack-nginx server installed, you will have to switch to PHP 5.6 and install svmstack-nginx before proceeding with the SolusVM upgrade.

How to upgrade SolusVM to a new version

The procedure involves upgrading the Master node as well as the Slave node. Let’s take a look at how our Server techs went about it.

Master node upgrade

  1. First, we will connect the Master node via SSH.
  2. Then, we will update the entire SolusVM infrastructure to the latest version.
    # upcp 2
  3. After that, run the following command to start upgrading the Master node to PHP 7.3:
    # curl -o php_updater.sh http://files.soluslabs.com/solusvmphp7/php_updater.sh && /bin/bash php_updater.sh
  4. Finally, verify PHP version is 7.3 with the command:
    # php -v
    PHP 7.3.11 (cli) (built: Jan 10 2020 08:49:53) ( NTS )
Copyright (c) 1997-2018 The PHP Group
Zend Engine v3.3.11, Copyright (c) 1998-2018 Zend Technologies
with the ionCube PHP Loader + ionCube24 v10.3.9, Copyright (c) 2002-2019, by ionCube Ltd.

If the SolusVM Master interface is unavailable, contact our Support Techs for further assistance.

Slave node upgrade: Scripted upgrade

  1. First, connect to the Master node via SSH.
  2. Then, we will start PHP 7.3 upgrade for all the slave nodes with the command:
    # upcp 4

Remember that although you will get a report saying the salve upgrade is complete, in reality, it will take ten minutes or more to be completed.

  3. Next, connect to the slave node via SSH.
  4. After that, verify PHO version is 7.3 with the following command:
    # php -v
    PHP 7.3.11 (cli) (built: Jan 10 2020 08:49:53) ( NTS )
Copyright (c) 1997-2018 The PHP Group
Zend Engine v3.3.11, Copyright (c) 1998-2018 Zend Technologies
with the ionCube PHP Loader + ionCube24 v10.3.9, Copyright (c) 2002-2019, by ionCube Ltd. \

Slave node upgrade: Manual upgrade
In case the scripted upgrade is not suitable, you can use the manual upgrade method for each slave node separately.

  1. First, connect to the slave node via SSH.
  2. Then, start the PHP 7.3 upgrade of that node with the following command:
    # /bin/bash /usr/local/solusvm/tmp/update/php_updater.sh
  3. After that, verify that the PHP version on the slave node is 7.3:
    php -v
    PHP 7.3.11 (cli) (built: Jan 10 2020 08:49:53) ( NTS )
Copyright (c) 1997-2018 The PHP Group
Zend Engine v3.3.11, Copyright (c) 1998-2018 Zend Technologies
with the ionCube PHP Loader + ionCube24 v10.3.9, Copyright (c) 2002-2019, by ionCube Ltd.
  4. Repeat these steps for each of the slave nodes in the SolusVM cluster.
