Docker Buildx Installation Guide

by | May 25, 2022

Docker Buildx installation is made simple by our in-house experts. Read on to find out more.

At Bobcares, we offer solutions for every query, big and small, as a part of our Docker Hosting Support Services.

Let’s take a look at how our Docker Support Team is ready to help customers with Docker Buildx installation.

How to install and set up Docker Buildx

Docker Buildx is a plugin responsible for extending the docker command. It comes with the complete support of features offered by Moby BuildKit builder toolkit. Furthermore, it offers the same experience like docker build with several new features like building against multiple nodes at the same time, creating scoped builder instances, and so on.

Additionally, Docker Buildx is a part of Docker Desktop for macOS, Windows, and Linux. We can manually download the latest Buildx binary from this link.

After downloading the binary, we have to rename it and copy it to the location according to the OS we are using:

Docker Buildx

Alternatively, we copy the binary to one of the following folders in order to install it system-wide:

    • On Windows:
      • C:\ProgramData\Docker\cli-plugins
      • C:\Program Files\Docker\cli-plugins
    • On Unix environments:
      • /usr/local/lib/docker/cli-plugins OR /usr/local/libexec/docker/cli-plugins
      • /usr/lib/docker/cli-plugins OR /usr/libexec/docker/cli-plugins

Once we have the binary, it is time to install and use Buildx within a Dockerfile via the docker/buildx-bin image as seen below:

FROM docker
COPY --from=docker/buildx-bin:latest /buildx /usr/libexec/docker/cli-plugins/docker-buildx
RUN docker buildx version

We can also execute docker commands without sudo by adding a username to the docker group. This involves finding the current username with who command. Next, we will add the username to the docker group as seen below:

$ sudo usermod -aG docker johndoe

After that, we have to reboot the system.

Finally, we will enable buildx by creating a new config.json file in the ~.docker folder. Furthermore, we have to enable the experimental feature as seen below:

$ mkdir ~/.docker
$ vim ~/.docker/config.json
{
 "experimental": "enabled"
}

After that we will be able to perform mutliarch builds:

docker buildx build -t johndoe/test:v0.0.1 . --push --platform linux/arm64

However, if we run into the following error, we have to create a new build interface:

failed to solve: rpc error: code = Unknown desc = failed to solve with frontend dockerfile.v0: failed to load LLB: runtime execution on platform linux/arm64 not supported

How to create build instance

  1. To begin with, list the existing buildx platforms.
  2. Then, create a new build instance.
  3. Next, verify the build instance and ensure the buildx platform exists.
  4. After that set the builder instance and build multi-platform image.
