Digitalocean: Change IP of Droplet

by | Jul 3, 2022

Anyone can use and access Digitalocean to change the IP of a droplet with the help of snapshots.

Bobcares answers all questions no matter the size, as part of our Digitalocean managed service

Let us take a look at accessing Digitalocean to change IP address of a droplet in detail.

Change IP of droplet

The user must recreate the droplet in order to obtain a new IP address. Additionally, in order to keep user data, the user must first take a snapshot of the current user droplet. The user can configure this by choosing the “Snapshots” tab in the server control panel.

Now, we can create a new droplet-based on that snapshot. To do so, select the snapshot from the “My Snapshots” tab: Now we can make a droplet based on the Snapshot. Select the snapshot from the “My Snapshots” page to accomplish this. Be sure to wait after creating the new droplet before destroying the first one.  It helps to ensure that we receive a new IP address.

The system will strive to provide the user with the same IP address if it is available because most individuals are more concerned about keeping or retaining their IP address. It is recommended to use a service like Sendgrid or Mandrill if it is just to send mail from the server. Both of them have free tiers. If it is unavailable, then recreate the droplet and choose another IP address.

Floating IP for Public Facing IP

Having a floating IP is one way to use a Public facing IP to reroute traffic from droplet to droplet.

If the droplets are located in the same data center, users can utilize a floating IP. This is essentially a static IP address, to reroute traffic to any of their droplets. Users can create one by choosing the droplet they wish to assign the floating IP to from the Networking- Floating IP(s) tab menu. It is important to note that the new droplet must be located in the same data center as the old one in order to receive the floating IP.

Every droplet has a distinct IP address. Create a new droplet if the IP address is blacklisted or receiving an error. Then, transfer the data from the old droplet to the new droplet.
