Basic Setup of Vultr cPanel

We have everything we need for the application to start, and we can have a server up and running in about a minute with Vultr’s One-Click cPanel. We can easily deploy a server with cPanel already set up. It is also a speedy method of launching a web hosting platform.

Setting up Vultr’s cPanel

Let’s see how to set up the Vultr cPanel with an example. We select 192.0.2.123 as the IP address. The WHM access is https://192.0.2.123:2087/ and cPanel access is https://192.0.2.123:2083/.

1. Firstly, connect to https://192.0.2.123:2087/ with a web browser.
2. Then log in with the root account for the instance.
3. Now agree to the user agreement.
4. Then enter the admin email address and nameservers. If we use Vultr DNS, enter ns1.vultr.com and ns2.vultr.com.
5. Finally, the WHM setup is complete. Now the browser will direct us to the full WHM panel.

Change Hostname

The hostname of the server must be an FQDN in the form of somesite.example.com in order for cPanel to function. The cPanel VPS’s hostname will by default be in the form cpanelXXXXXX.vultr.com. Navigate to Networking Setup > Change Hostname in the WHM control panel to change the hostname.

We can also set the hostname from an SSH terminal session:

# /usr/local/cpanel/bin/set_hostname examplehost.example.com

While changing the hostname, we have to keep certain things in mind.

• Choose a hostname that won’t be used by a cPanel account on the server.
• Also avoid selecting a hostname that begins with www or a number, or a hostname that ends with a hyphen (-).
• As the hostname will appear in mail headers, avoid selecting socially unacceptable hostnames.
• Use of lowercase, Latin-script letters in hostnames.
• Use a fully-qualified domain name (FQDN) that uniquely identifies the server.

Licensing

Vultr handles the license management part of running a cPanel server automatically. So the VPS price includes the cost of the cPanel license as a surcharge. The surcharge is also disclosed on the server order page.

Also running the following command as the root user will resolve most licensing issues:

/usr/local/cpanel/cpkeyclt
