Digitalocean Recovery Console: A Guide on

PDF Header PDF Footer

Let us take a closer look at the Digitalocean recovery console with the support of our Digitalocean-managed services at Bobcares.

What is Digitalocean Recovery Console?

The Recovery Console is available independent of the network settings and allows out-of-band access.

It simulates the experience of sitting down with a keyboard and monitor connected to the actual server. To recover regular access, utilize this function to log in and reverse bad settings.

To recover from network problems or to boot from the recovery ISO, use the Digitalocean recovery console. Use the Droplet Console or SSH instead to connect to the Droplet properly.

Reset the Root Password

Consider that a user already has the credentials to log in if they regularly log in to the Droplet using a password, or if they have specified a password for the root or a sudo user on the server.

If a user connects to the server through SSH keys but hasn’t set up a password for the root account or a sudo user, they must utilize the DigitalOcean Control Panel to generate a new root password.

Note that it is important to reset the root password before accessing the Digitalocean recovery console.

Access the control panel. Locate the Droplet within the project, or via the main navigation’s Droplets page. To open the Droplet’s detail page, click its name, then pick Access from the left menu.

To reset the Droplet’s password, click Reset Root Password. It will send an email with the Droplet’s temporary password.

Log In with the Recovery Console

Click the name of the Droplet to access in the DigitalOcean Control Panel, then pick Access from the left menu. To access the Digitalocean recovery console, click the Launch Recovery Console button.

When the console appears, click the console screen and hit ENTER to bring the login prompt to the foreground. Enter the user to log in at the login box.

This is usually the root user or a user with sudo rights. When typing directly into the terminal, the number keys may initially be read incorrectly, as if the SHIFT key is pushed. Tapping the 2 key, for example, may result in the input @.

This only occurs when typing. To avoid this issue, copy the content and paste it into the Digitalocean recovery console using CTRL + v.

It is also feasible to restore this behavior and check that keystrokes are successfully received by pressing SHIFT and CTRL many times before testing the number keys.

When asked, enter the password for the account. The password is not displayed on the screen as we type or paste it into the command line for security reasons.

Enter the password and then hit ENTER. If this is the first log-in after resetting the root password via the control panel, enter the password again and a prompt to pick a new password will open up.

This is the final step in recovering passwords with the Digitalocean recovery console.

After properly entering the credentials, the Droplet should be logged in. To regain network access, fix or reset configuration files or services.
