How to add additional storage on Proxmox LVM?

Proxmox local-lvm storage keeps the virtual machine’s HDD and volume container. In Proxmox, we occasionally want to add more storage so that the results of the backup schedule and other things can be kept.

We should first create additional storage. We can choose an external HDD or flash disk. After inserting the additional storage, we have to configure it in such a way that the Proxmox can identify the flash drive as additional storage. We can do this in two ways: GUI and CLI.

Adding storage via GUI

We have to run the following steps to add additional storage on Proxdmox LVM.

  1. Firstly, login to the Proxmox dashboard.
  2. Then click on the Datacenter in the top left corner.
  3. Now choose Storage from the options.
  4. The option to Add, Remove and Edit will appear.
  5. Select Add and then click Directory.
  6. Now a pop-up window will appear. We have to provide the details for the ID, Directory, and Content text fields. Set Nodes to “All” and check the Enable option.
  7. Finally, click the Add button.

Now we can find the newly added storage under Datacenter >> Storage.

Adding storage via CLI

We can use the below command to add additional storage (Here, it is a flash disk) in Proxmox:

pvesm add dir your_own_dir --path your_usb_path --content purpose_of_storage
