AWS AMI EBS Snapshot | About
In AWS, an Amazon Machine Image is a template for creating virtual machine instances in the cloud.
When we create an AMI, we can choose to include an Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) snapshot as part of the image.
According to our experts, an EBS snapshot is a point-in-time copy of an EBS volume. In other words, an EBS volume is a durable block-level storage device. We can attach it to an EC2 instance. It provides persistent storage for our EC2 instances.
AMI and EBS snapshot are related as seen here:
- When creating an AMI, we can choose to create it from an existing EC2 instance or from an EBS snapshot. In case we choose an EBS snapshot, AWS uses the snapshot as the source for the root volume of the new AMI.
- Additionally, an EBS snapshot has all the data stored on an EBS volume at the time the snapshot is taken.
- EBS snapshots are incremental backups. In other words only the data that has changed since the last snapshot is stored. This saves storage space and reduces the time required for backups.
- Furthermore, EBS snapshots are taken while the EBS volume is in use. This ensures data consistency.
- EBS snapshots can be used to restore EBS volumes. Additionally, we can create new volumes based on the snapshot.
- In addition, EBS snapshots can also be used for data replication and disaster recovery purposes. By creating snapshots of our EBS volumes and storing them in different regions or AWS accounts, we can replicate our data and ensure business continuity in case of a failure or disaster.
As seen above, EBS snapshots and AMIs are closely related. We can create AMIs with EBS snapshots as the source. This allows us to capture a complete image of an EC2 instance.
