Email aliases in Sendmail or Postfix

When we use Sendmail or Postfix as the MTA, we may set up email aliases to route incoming messages to specific users or groups. This is also important when we wish to route emails to several recipients or hide a user’s actual email address by offering an alternative alias.

Depending on whether we’re using Sendmail or Postfix, the procedure of configuring aliases may differ slightly.

Email aliases in Sendmail or Postfix: Setup Steps

1. The aliases file is typically found at /etc/aliases or /etc/mail/aliases on a standard Unix-like system. So, using a text editor, open the aliases file, and add or amend the alias entries. Each alias item is made up of two parts: the alias name and one or more destination email addresses.

2. Then save the aliases file after making the necessary adjustments.

3. In order to update the aliases database, use the relevant command. We would use the newaliases command for Sendmail and the postalias command for Postfix. This step ensures that the aliases file changes are applied.

4. Also, to apply the modifications, restart the Sendmail or Postfix service. Depending on the system settings, the command to restart the service may differ. We can, for example, use service sendmail restart or service postfix restart.

Any incoming email addressed to an alias will be automatically forwarded to the designated recipient(s) when the aliases have been configured.
