by | Oct 9, 2023

Let’s take a closer look at OPNsense HAProxy Virtual IP. At Bobcares, with our Server Management Service, we can handle your HAProxy issues.

What Is OPNsense HAProxy Virtual IP?

A Virtual IP (VIP) is a networking feature that enables us to add extra IP addresses to a network interface on the OPNsense firewall when used with HAProxy and OPNsense. When paired with HAProxy, these virtual IP addresses can be utilized for a variety of tasks, such as load balancing and high availability scenarios.

Steps To Set Up OPNsense HAProxy Virtual IP

We must follow the below steps to set up the virtual IP:

1. Login with administrative rights to the OPNsense web interface.

2. From the top menu, select Interfaces.

3. To include a New VIP:

i. The “Interface assignments” tab should be selected.

ii. To add a new VIP, click the “+” symbol.

iii. Choose the interface to which we want to add the VIP.

iv. Select the kind of VIP we wish to develop.

v. Set up the IP address, subnet mask, and other necessary parameters for the virtual IP. For HAProxy use cases, we must set the “Type” to “Proxy ARP” or “IP Alias”.

4. To apply the modifications to the OPNsense firewall, click “Apply Changes” after clicking “Save” to save the VIP settings.

Now, we can use a Virtual IP within the HAProxy setup. To spread incoming traffic among various backend servers. Set the Virtual IP address as the bind address for the frontend and backend configurations in the HAProxy configuration.

5. Using this IP, we can test the HAProxy seup to make sure traffic is being distributed as intended. Verify HAProxy’s functionality by keeping an eye on its logs and status.
