Modernizing Infrastructure Monitoring with Prometheus, Grafana, and ELK
The client’s infrastructure comprised several Linux servers hosting web applications, APIs, and databases. CPU, memory, disk utilization, and other basic resources were monitored, but there was limited visibility into application behavior and overall system performance. Logs were also stored on individual servers, making incident investigation slow and difficult.
To modernize the monitoring environment, Bobcares implemented the ELK stack, Grafana, and Prometheus. Prometheus collected infrastructure metrics, while Grafana provided monitoring dashboards. Filebeat, Logstash, Elasticsearch, and Kibana were used to centralize and analyze logs. Alertmanager was also configured to send alerts for critical infrastructure conditions.
Business Challenge
The existing monitoring setup provided basic resource visibility but lacked detailed metrics, centralized logging, and effective event correlation. Engineers had to access individual Linux servers during incidents, making troubleshooting slower and limiting their ability to detect infrastructure problems before they affected applications.
Technology Used
Blueprint
Prometheus collected system metrics exposed by Node Exporter and supplied them to Grafana dashboards. Filebeat collected server and application logs, Logstash processed them, and Elasticsearch stored them for Kibana analysis. Prometheus alerts were routed through Alertmanager for notification and operational response.
Key Outcomes
- Improved visibility into infrastructure health.
- Centralized system and application logs.
- Enabled real-time infrastructure dashboards.
- Improved correlation between metrics and log events.
- Supported proactive detection of infrastructure issues.
- Simplified incident investigation across multiple servers.
- Enabled historical analysis for capacity planning.
- Reduced alert fatigue through Alertmanager-based routing and deduplication.
Customer Profile
The Challenges
- Existing monitoring provided only basic CPU, memory, and disk metrics.
- Limited visibility into detailed system and application behavior.
- Logs were stored locally across individual servers.
- Engineers had to access multiple machines during incidents.
- Metrics and logs were handled through separate systems.
- Correlating performance problems with log events was difficult.
- The previous setup lacked interactive infrastructure dashboards.
- Critical conditions required more effective alerting and notification.
- Increasing infrastructure complexity made manual investigation less practical.
Why Bobcares?
The existing environment needed a monitoring platform that could bring metrics, logs, dashboards, and alerts into a more centralized workflow.
- Prometheus provided time-series infrastructure metrics.
- Grafana provided a visual view of infrastructure health.
- ELK centralized logs from multiple servers.
- Alertmanager provided alert deduplication and routing.
- The architecture allowed engineers to investigate metrics and logs from a central monitoring environment.
- Historical data supported infrastructure analysis and capacity planning.
What We Delivered
Bobcares replaced the limited monitoring approach with a centralized observability stack covering metrics, visualization, logging, and alerting.
- Deployed Prometheus as the central metrics collection system.
- Installed Node Exporter across Linux servers.
- Configured collection of CPU, memory, disk I/O, and network metrics.
- Integrated Grafana with Prometheus.
- Built dashboards for infrastructure health and resource utilization.
- Deployed Filebeat for server and application log collection.
- Configured Logstash to process and structure collected logs.
- Used Elasticsearch for centralized log storage.
- Integrated Kibana for log search, analysis, and visualization.
- Configured Prometheus alert rules for critical conditions.
- Integrated Alertmanager for alert handling and notification routing.
- Added monitoring for CPU utilization, memory exhaustion, disk space, and service downtime.
- Used alert deduplication to reduce unnecessary notifications.
The Results
Monitoring Coverage
Before: The earlier setup mainly tracked CPU, memory, and disk usage, with limited detail on what was happening across the servers.
After: Prometheus collected a wider set of infrastructure metrics, while Grafana made the information easier to follow through dashboards and historical views.
Log Management
Before: Application and system logs remained on the Linux servers where they were generated, requiring engineers to check machines separately.
After: Logs from the servers now pass through Filebeat and Logstash before being indexed in Elasticsearch. Kibana gives engineers a single interface for searching that data.
Incident Investigation
Before: Investigating an incident involved gathering information from several servers before engineers could compare what was happening across the environment.
After: Server metrics and logs were available through the same observability setup, giving engineers a more practical way to examine an issue across the infrastructure.
Alert Coverage
Before: The previous monitoring arrangement offered limited alerting for conditions that could affect server availability or resource capacity.
After: Alert rules were set up in Prometheus for conditions including high CPU usage, memory exhaustion, low disk space, and service downtime. Alertmanager handles the resulting notifications.
Operational Visibility
Before: Monitoring data was spread across separate tools, making it harder to build a consistent view of infrastructure behavior over time.
After: Engineers can review infrastructure metrics in Grafana and investigate related log data through Kibana, rather than working with monitoring information separately on each server.
