Snapshot Lifecycle Management Transformation Across AWS Environments
Business Challenge
Snapshot and backup practices lacked automation, visibility, and consistent retention across AWS environments, increasing data risk, storage costs, and recovery uncertainty.
Technology Used
Blueprint
Bobcares defined an automated Snapshot Lifecycle Management framework with tagging, monitoring, and cleanup controls to improve backup reliability, cost control, and recovery readiness.

Key Components and Implementation Highlights
Current State Assessment
Production and Pre-Production environments showed limited DLM coverage, missing backup tags, unmanaged legacy snapshots, and no monitoring for snapshot success or failure. Test environments relied entirely on manual snapshot creation with no retention or cleanup practices.
Risk and Impact Analysis
The audit identified data loss exposure, rising EBS snapshot costs, misaligned compliance, and poor disaster recovery readiness. Snapshot failures could go unnoticed due to the absence of alerts or reporting.
Recommended SLM Strategy
Automated DLM policies were proposed to cover all EC2 and EBS volumes based on workload criticality. Standardized tagging was defined to support policy targeting, ownership tracking, and audits. Monitoring and alerting using event-driven services were recommended to ensure visibility into snapshot success and failures. A phased legacy snapshot cleanup plan was outlined to safely remove obsolete data.
Disaster Recovery Enablement
The strategy included documented restore procedures, validation testing in isolated environments, and scheduled recovery drills to strengthen business continuity and align with RPO and RTO requirements.
Key Aspects and Modules
- Automated snapshot policies across all environments.
- Standardized tagging for governance and cost attribution.
- Monitoring and reporting for backup success and failures.
- Controlled cleanup of legacy snapshots.
- Tested and documented disaster recovery workflows.
The Results
Key Metric |
Before |
After Implementation |
| Backup Coverage | Inconsistent | Near 100% coverage |
| Snapshot Governance | Manual and unmanaged | Policy-driven lifecycle |
| Storage Usage | Excessive growth | 30–50% reduction |
| Monitoring Visibility | None | Real-time alerts |
| DR Readiness | Unvalidated | Tested and documented |
The Business Impact
- Improved backup reliability reduced the risk of data loss across critical workloads.
- Controlled retention and cleanup lowered ongoing storage costs.
- Automated monitoring improved incident response and audit readiness.
- Documented recovery workflows strengthened business continuity and compliance posture.
- The framework supports future expansion across accounts and regions.
