Restore terminated KVM/XEN VM like an expert

by | Nov 19, 2021

Restore terminated KVM/XEN VM like a pro with a little help from Bobcares.

At Bobcares, we are committed to coming up with solutions for each and every query that comes our way as a part of our Server Management Service.

Let’s take a look at how our Support Team helped a customer recently with restoring terminated KVM and XEN VMs.

How to restore terminated KVM VM

  1. First, we will create a new VM from SolusVM using the same resource or one larger than the terminated one.
  2. Next, each VM will have three backup files present in the backup server as seen below:
    # Backup file: VSERVERID-kvm-kvmID-1.bz
    # VM config file: kvmID.xml
    # LVM config file: config-VSERVERID.dat
  3. Then, we will rename the backup file with new kvmID and vserverID.
    # newvserverID-kvm-newkvmID-1.bz
    # newkvmID.xml
    # config-newvserver ID.dat

For instance, consider kvm131 as the new kvmID and 121 as the new ververID here:

    # 121-kvm-kvm131-1.bz
    # kvm131.xml
    # config-121.dat
  4. After we rename the files, we will edit config.dat and XML files to update the new VM’s kvmID as well as LVM path in it.
  5. Finally, we will run /scripts/ftp-restore, the restoration script on a slave node.

How to restore terminated XEN VM

  1. First, we will create a new VM from SolusVM using the same resource or one larger than the terminated one.
  2. Next, each VM will have three backup files present in the backup server as seen below:
    #Backup file: VSERVERID-xen-vmID-1.bz
    # VM config file: vmID.cfg
    # LVM config file: config-VSERVERID.dat
  3. Then, we will rename the backup file with new vmID and vserverID.
    # newvserverID-xen-newvmID-1.bz
    # newvmID.cfg
    # config-newvserver ID.dat

For instance, consider vm131 as the new vmID and 121 as the new ververID here:

    # 121-xen-vm131-1.bz
    #vm131.cfg
    # config-121.dat
  4. After we rename the files, we will edit config.dat and XML files to update the new VM’s vmID as well as LVM path in it.
  5. Finally, we will run /scripts/ftp-restore, the restoration script on a slave node.
