An Introduction to Hyper-V Manager on Vultr

Hyper-V can be described as a virtualization technology that enables us to deploy virtual machines easily on a Windows server. However, in some scenarios, we may come across an error message while installing Hyper-V on a VPS which prevents us from proceeding.

An Introduction to Hyper-V Manager on Vultr

This often occurs because Microsoft assumes we want to run VMs on a VPS. Fortunately, our experts have come up with a way to install the tools we need for remote administration instead of Hyper-V itself. Let’s take a look at this done:

  1. First, open the Powershell and run the following command:

    Install-WindowsFeature Hyper-V-Tools

  2. Next, run this command to check if it can find all available Hyper-V modules:

    Get-WindowsFeature Hyper-V*

If there is a check next to Hyper-V GUI Management Tools, the management tools were successfully installed. We can also choose to install the module for PowerShell with this command:

    Install-WindowsFeature Hyper-V-PowerShell

  3. Now, we have to open the Hyper-V Manager, and then click Connect to Server. Then enter the credentials in order to connect to the server.

In case the servers are connected to a domain controller, we have to connect the local server to search through the directory for Hyper-V servers as well.

  4. At this point, we will be able to manage all servers on a remote Hyper-V server easily from the local server.

Similarly, we can easily create a new instance on Vultr and connect to it using Remote Desktop. Then, we have to open the Server Manager and head to Local Server. Here. We have to click Configure IE Enhanced Security Configuration link in order to disable the enhanced security configuration for users and administrators.

After that, we have to click the Add Features button to install the Hyper-V feature.

Once installation is successful, we can access Hyper-V Manager from the Start menu to create and manage virtual machines within Hyper-V on our Vultr instance.
