Get ready to upgrade ESXi on an OVH server with ease. Our OVH Support team is here to help you with your questions and concerns.

How to upgrade ESXi OVH

If you are looking for a step-by-step guide to help upgrade ESXi, you are in luck. Our experts have put together these steps to help you out:

How to upgrade ESXi OVH

  1. To begin with, we have to SSH into the ESXi installation.
  2. Then, run the following command:

    esxcli software profile install -d http://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml -p ESXi-x.x.0-1331820-standard –ok-to-remove

If we come across a broken pipe (Errno 32) on Vmware_locker_tools_light after running the above command, we have to place the server in Maintenance Mode via the vSphere client.

Alternatively, we can place the box in Maintenace Mode via SSH if we do not have vSphere with this command:

    vim-cmd /hostsvc/maintenance_mode_enter

  3. Then, we have to enter the reboot command to reboot the box onto 5.5.
  4. Now, we will be able to connect our vSphere client to our box and get an error message asking us to update our client to 5.5. We can easily update the client with the steps in the next section.

How to upgrade on the Panel Side

  1. To begin with, log in to the OVH control panel and then head to navigate to the IPMI section.
  2. Then, verify IPMI is enabled and note down the login credentials.
  3. Next, use the login credentials from the previous step and log in to the IPMI web interface.
  4. After that, create a backup of the current ESXi configuration and settings.
  5. Next, we must download the latest version of the VMware ESXi ISO file from the official website.
  6. Now, mount the VMware ESXi ISO image by clicking Virtual Storage and then CD/DVD. Then, browse to the location where the ISO file is saved and select it.
  7. At this point, reboot the server by choosing Power Control and then Reset Server.
  8. Now, we have to follow the instructions by the VMware ESXi installer to complete upgrading ESXi on the OVH server.
  9. After the upgradation process, we have to remove the mounted ISO image by clicking Virtual Storage and then CD/DVD, and then selecting Unmount.
  10. Then, we must reboot the server to start using the upgraded VMware ESXi.

Finally, we can verify that the upgrade was successful by checking the version number of the ESXi host in the vSphere Client or the vSphere Web Client.

      Hi Suresh,
Upgrading VMware ESXi from 7.0 to 8.0 on OVH Cloud should not disturb or erase your installed VMs, but it’s essential to follow best practices and make backups before the upgrade.
