how to configure the Failover for WAN on Pfsense
Follow the steps given below to set up failure:
- Use the Admin account to log into Pfsense.
- After that, we will set up Failover for two WAN links.
- System – Routing – Gateway Groups Select – Select Add.
- After that, we have to enter the name
- -In Gateway Priority: Select Active link is Tier1, Backup link is Tier2 – Tier5
- Do the following in the Trigger level as the next step to set up Pfsense wan failover:
Only activated when one of the two transmission lines is entirely down.
Packet Loss: Active Failover occurs when packet loss exceeds the given threshold (packet unit).
High Latency: Active Failover when the latency exceeds the set threshold (in seconds).
Combine both scenarios of packet loss and high latency. Now move to the next step to set up Pfsense failover.
- Click on the Save button after the process.
- -Set up a Firewall rule for the Load Balancer.
- Finally, from Firewall go to rule and click on the Add button and click on custom policy.

Team,
We have a 2nd ISP that just installed into our office building (google fiber) and I am trying to set up a 2nd (failover gateway) to our PFsense firewall and am seeing a “Gateway, Offline, 100% packetloss.” Even though the gateway isn’t technically in use unless of an outage/failover is that normal for me to see? Or, is the issue related to the setup of our gateway? Any guidance would be very helpful. Thank you very much!
