All About Rootless Docker Container

Learn how to install and configure Rootless Docker Container. Our Docker Support team is here to help you with your questions and concerns.

All About Rootless Docker Container

Rootless Docker can be described as a Docker installation where the Docker daemon runs as root, but the containers operate as regular Linux users.

All About Rootless Docker Container

It enables users to manage Docker containers in a rootless environment.

The rootless mode creates a user namespace and then starts the daemon within the remapped namespace. As a result, the daemon and containers use a different user namespace than the host system, resulting in better isolation and security.

How to Install Rootless Docker

  1. First, we have to download the rootless Docker installation script from the official website with this command:curl -sSL https://get.docker.com/rootless | sh
  2. Then, open the `.bashrc` file and add the following environmental variables to it:

    export PATH=/home/$user/bin:$PATH
    export DOCKER_HOST=unix:///run/user/$id/docker.sock

Remember to replace `$user` with the Linux user for whom we want to install Docker and replace `$id` with the user’s ID code.

  3. Now, we have to save the changes to the file and exit.
  4. Next, start the rootless Docker daemon.

How to Configure Rootless Docker

  1. First, we have to use docker: <version>dind-rootless image instead of docker: <version>-dind in order to use Rootless Docker within a root Docker environment.

    docker run -d --name dind-rootless --privileged docker:24.0-dind-rootless

  2. Now, we have to enable the ping` command by opening the `/etc/sysctl.conf` file and adding the following line:

    net.ipv4.ping_group_range = 0 2147483647

  3. Then, run the following command to apply the changes and enable `ping:

    sudo sysctl –system

  4. Next, we can expose privileged ports, by setting `CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE`, and restarting docker as seen here:

    sudo setcap cap_net_bind_service=ep $(which rootlesskit)
    systemctl --user restart docker

At the end of the day, Rootless Docker offers a way to run containers by allowing them to operate as regular Linux users rather than running with root privileges.
