How to setup remote MySQL connection in cPanel?

by | Dec 12, 2019

Are you trying to connect to the database from another network? Then you need to enable the remote MySQL connection in cPanel.

If we try to connect the database using the third party software it does not run on the server. This is referred to as making a remote MySQL connection.

So at Bobcares, we often get requests from our customers to enable the remote MySQL connection as part of our Server Management Services.

Today, let’s get into the details on how our Support Engineers enable it for the customers.

Why do we enable the remote MySQL connection cPanel?

By default, the remote MySQL connections are disabled on the server. This is to prevent potential security risks to MySQL.

We enable remote MySQL connections through WHM or cPanel.

Allowing all will lead to a high server load due to which the server slows down.

So, the best option is to set up a remote MySQL connection. Let us discuss how our Support Engineers enable MySQL connection.

Different ways to enable the remote MySQL connection?

So far we discussed the remote MySQL connection in detail. Before enabling the MySQL connection we first make sure that port 3306 opened on the server firewall. If the port is not open, we open it first.

Now let’s see how our Support Engineers enable the remote MySQL connection from WHM and cPanel.

1. Enable Remote MySQL from cPanel

Let us discuss how we enable remote MYSQL connection from the cPanel.

1. First, we log into cPanel.

2. Then we click the Remote MySQL in the Databases section.

3. After, we entered the remote IP address in the Add Access Host section.

4. Then we clicked the Add Host button.

5. After that, we got a message stating the host IP address was added to the access list.

Thus, we added the IP address for a remote MySQL connection. After adding the IP we were able to connect to MySQL.

2. Enable Remote MySQL from WHM

We can also enable remote MySQL connection from the WHM. Let us discuss how our Support Engineers enable it from WHM.

1. Firstly, we log into the WHM.

2. Then we locate SQL Services and select  Additional MySQL Access Hosts link.

3. Next, we entered the  IP address or host(s) that wish to grant remote MySQL access to and click the Save button.

Thus, the remote MYSQL connection is activated

How to fix the common error while enabling the remote MySQL connection?

Recently one of our customers contacted us with an error when he tried to enable the remote MYSQL connection. It returns the error 1045 – access denied for user. So Let’s see how our Support Engineers fix this error for our customers.

1. Check IP address

Sometimes the ISP (Internet Service Provider) may change the customer’s public IP address. If that is the case, we find out the public IP address from the customer.

Once we know the current IP address, go back and make sure that it is in the list of allowed IP addresses for the Remote MySQL. If we find it was not on the list, we add the new one on the list.

2. Check the MySQL password

In this case, the customers used the wrong database username and password. It leads to this error when he tries to connect to the remote MySQL. So we reset the password and provided the correct logins to the customer.

Thus we fix this common error for our customers.
