Percona incremental backup – Why use it, and how to set it up

Percona incremental backup – Why use it, and how to set it up

A properly configured backup helps you bounce back from a server failure within minutes. However, backups impose a performance penalty and it is known to even bring down servers due to high load. So, backups should be setup such that it uses as little resources as possible. (more…)

How to setup and maintain Percona backup using XtraBackup

Backups are your insurance against server failures. A well designed backup helps you quickly get back online even if the whole server is lost. For modern websites running WordPress, Magento, etc., the entire information is stored in databases. So, a sound backup design for such sites should include reliable database backups. (more…)

How to backup and restore oVirt engine

How to backup and restore oVirt engine

In our recent post ‘How to configure VM backups in oVirt, we saw how we configured a VM backup system for a cloud service provider. We further went ahead and expanded the backup system with oVirt engine backups.

oVirt engine manages the centralized configuration of the cloud system. This engine manages provisioning of VMs, connection protocols, user sessions, VM images, VM environment configuration, etc. It also provides a graphical interface to view, create and manage VMs. The engine configuration is saved in oVirt engine database and configuration files.

Backup and Recovery Strategy for a Webhost

There are two major events that haunt every Webhost. One is the ghastly image of the word “HacKeD” popping up on all of the sites on their server, usually accompanied by a skull. Neon green always being the color of choice. The second is usually in the form of a mail or phone call informing you that the hard drive on your server just went bust. As far as problems for Webhosts go, these rank right up there with “Houston…we have a problem.”

R1soft and Buffalo Terastation- An Efficient and Easy-To-Use Backup System for Web Hosts

In every server farm, backup systems play a vital role in data retention and and recovery. When it comes to Linux, there are many open source backup solutions available. You can setup a well organized backup strategy using rsync, dd, tar, cpio etc, as per your requirement. But, these backups may turn out to be time consuming during restoration and do not provide good options for bare metal restoration. It is always better to go for a good interface through which we can restore data, quickly. In such a scenario, R1soft can be used as an optimal solution.

Usually, a backup server will be used to store the entire backup data. Server farms consists of several terabytes of data, which makes it quite difficult to manage them using a local storage. So normally NAS devices are chosen to ensure reliable backup operations. For such a setup, Buffalo Terastation Pro, which provides a very reliable and good management interface will be a good option.

Understanding EXT3 File System and Data Recovery using ext3grep

Most of the Linux servers are today loaded with the EXT3 File System. We have come across a lot of incidents where files have gone lost through a simple rm -rf command, either done accidentally or sometimes even intentionally by others. There has always been a misconception that such files cannot be retrieved in ext3. In fact, it is quite possible to retrieve the data.

On further investigation into this, I was able to locate a lot of tools that could help recovering the deleted data from an ext3 file system. Magicrescue, Ext3grep, Testdisk, Ddrescue, Photorec and ext3undel are some examples, to list a few.

I was in pursuit of a tool that is capable of recovering all file types and is exclusively designed for the ext3 file system. One among the best tools that I found and would like to take you through is ext3grep.

Why ext3grep

This tool provides a good set of command line features and a good idea regarding the ext3 file system. Before proceeding further, let’s look into the merits and demerits of this tool.

Data center in a Box

Imagine a scenario where a data center runs out of space. What does the business need to do? It needs to find more space, build the infrastructure, racks, cooling, power and everything that needs to be done to make it a real brick and mortar data-center. Anything from a year plus to build something like that. Wait and spend a lot of money, before any real results come out of it.

Well, those are all scenarios from the past, if vendors like HP are to be believed. They’ve built an entire data center in a 8 ft by 40 ft container, complete with racks, cooling, power and everything it takes to run a data center.

With support for up to 3500 servers in that small space, they promise 50% power savings compared to a traditional data center. What does it mean for data centers?

Information Backup

Information is an asset that, just like other important business assets, should be adequately safeguarded, in order to maintain competitive advantage. Information is not only the software files, like spreadsheets and reports. Its also the knowledge that we carry in our heads. Its the Intellectual property of an organization.

Imagine, losing your data, during a system upgrade, or due to hardware problems. Unlike your hardware, information not insurable. Loss of information or its compromise can be devastating to a company, and an unimaginable gain for its competitors. An important aspect of Information security is Information Backup. Information Backup, unlike data backup, is not limited to technical backing up of a few computers. It is an organizational strategy of maintaining the integrity and availability of information and the Information processing facility. It includes well-oiled and rehearsed strategies on recovering data.
