OVH Site Not Installed Error Fix: Causes and Solutions
If you are seeing the “Site not installed” error when trying to access your website hosted on OVHcloud, you’re not alone. This is a common issue among users setting up a new site or making changes to their domain settings. Fortunately, the fix is usually easy once we understand the root causes.
Today, we will investigate the cause of this error and provide step-by-step solutions to help you get your website back online quickly.
An Overview:
What Does the “Site Not Installed” Error Mean?
When this error appears, it means the OVH web server can’t locate the correct website files for the domain. In other words, the server doesn’t know which folder to pull the website content from. This may be because the domain isn’t properly linked to the hosting plan or the DNS settings are incorrect.
This issue can sometimes appear alongside other common hosting misconfigurations, such as OVH IPMI not working, especially during server provisioning or migrations.
Common Causes of the Error
There are two main reasons we may run into this issue:
- Incorrect Multisite or Domain Declaration
The domain or subdomain may not be properly configured in the Multisite section of the OVH hosting plan. If it’s not listed or if the root folder is incorrectly set, the server has no way to serve the website files.
- DNS Misconfiguration
The DNS records for the domain don’t point to the correct IP address of your OVH hosting plan. This can happen if the A or AAAA record points to the wrong IP, or if the DNS changes haven’t fully propagated yet.
If you’ve recently changed nameservers, it’s a good idea to double-check those settings—this guide on changing OVH nameservers can help ensure everything is correctly configured.
How to Fix the “Site Not Installed” Error
Step 1. Verify Domain or Subdomain Declaration in the Multisite Section
- First, log in to the OVHcloud Control Panel.
- Then, go to Web Cloud > Hosting plans.
- Next, select the hosting plan and click the Multisite tab.
If the domain appears in the Multisite table, wait around 20 minutes and clear the browser cache. If the error persists, go to Step 2.
In case the domain does not appear in the Multisite table, add the domain/subdomain.
If the domain was removed unexpectedly, it may be managed by another OVH account. In that case, we need to add it again, but treat it as an external domain.
Step 2. Check DNS Settings and IP Address Configuration
To make sure the domain points to the correct server:
- First, go to Web Cloud > Hosting plans.
- Then, select the hosting plan.
- Under General Information, locate the IPv4 address.
- Now, we need to verify DNS records. So, go to Web Cloud > Domain names in the Control Panel.
- Then, select the domain and go to the DNS zone tab.
- Check the A record (IPv4) or AAAA record (IPv6).
If the correct IP is listed, wait for DNS propagation (can take 4–24 hours). Clear the browser cache and restart the devices.
In case of incorrect or missing IP, add or correct the A/AAAA record using OVH’s DNS zone editor.
If the DNS zone is not found or the DNS servers mismatch, the domain may not be managed from the OVH account. In this scenario, use the WHOIS tool to find the registrar.
Sometimes, email configurations can also be impacted by DNS changes. For mail-related issues, see our guide on configuring OVH mail in Thunderbird.
The “Site not installed” error on OVH is typically caused by misconfigured Multisite settings or incorrect DNS records. By checking these configurations carefully and allowing for DNS propagation delays, you can quickly resolve the issue and get your website back online.
