Horde Webmail login failed- How to fix it for Plesk

PDF Header PDF Footer

Horde, a commonly used webmail client has its own share of errors and bugs. Often Horde webmail displays a login failed message in spite of the use of correct passwords.

It happens due to a misconfiguration in IMAP setting.

At Bobcares, we often receive requests to fix Horde errors as part of our Server Management Services.

Today, let’s see how we fix this error for our customers.

What causes the Horde Webmail login failed error?

The most common reason behind a login failed message in  Horde is an incorrect combination of username and password. Obviously, it is important to ensure that the login that we use for log in is correct.

However, in spite of using the correct username and password, users sometimes see the message “Login failed because your username or password was entered incorrectly“. It can a bit tricky as users may see this error even after resetting the credentials to a new one.

This could happen due to a variety of reasons like not enabling plain text authentication, incorrect permission of the host file, etc.

Lets us now discuss in detail on changing the Horde setting to fix this error.

How to fix the Horde Webmail login failed error?

Recently, one of our customers approached us with a Horde login error.

The error message he provided was:

Login failed because your username or password was entered incorrectly.

Horde webmail login failed

The IMAP support was disabled in the Horde configuration file  /etc/psa-webmail/horde/horde/conf.php. This triggered the Login failed message. The steps that we followed to fix it were:

  • Firstly, we logged into the server via SSH.
  • Then, we navigated to /etc/psa-webmail/horde/horde/conf.php file.
  • Lastly, we edited the file so as to activate the Horde IMAP support. We changed the misconfiguration by editing
    $conf['imap']['enabled'] = true;

It fixed the issue for the customer.

Likewise, the fix for the error triggered by incorrect permission of the host is to correct the permission. The permission for the file should be set to 644.
