How to Implement Algolia Search in Drupal 9

With user experience playing a key role, it is important to make it easier to help users find what they’re looking for.

This is where Algolia’s site search and discovery API comes into play.

How to Implement Algolia Search in Drupal 9

Today, we are going to take a look at how to set up Algolia for our site and optimize it for a seamless user experience.

    1. To begin with, head to the website or app’s admin panel and find the Configuration section.
    2. Then, head to the “Search and metadata” option.
    3. Next, click “Search API” and then select “Add Server.”
    4. Now, we have to enter a name for our server.
    5. Then, select “Algolia” as our choice when configuring the backend.
    6. Now, head to Algolia’s website and click our username in the top-right corner. Then, head to API Keys under Settings.
    7. Then, copy and paste the Application ID and Admin API Key from the dashboard and save them.
    8. Now, it is time to create facets. Facets let users filter and narrow down their search results. So head to the Configuration tab and click “Facets.”
  1. Next, click “Add an Attribute” in the “Attributes for Faceting” section. We can define what users can filter by when searching.

Now let’s take a look at some of the common issues seen while setting up Algolia and how to fix them:

  • There is a default limit of 50 displayed facets on the Algolia Shopify app configuration page. In case our facets exceed this limit, we have to increase it.
  • Another common issue is when facets disappear after updating the index. This usually happens when facets are configured directly in the Algolia dashboard’s Facets section. Although it might work initially, changes or reindexing can overwrite our settings.
  • Furthermore, we can ensure our facets are stable by making the changes in the “Facets” configuration section of the Algolia Shopify app. We can access this by heading to Search Options -> InstantSearch -> Customize -> Facets.
This displays all default facets and any custom facets added via Named Tags or Metafields.

With the above tips, we can use Algolia’s site search and discovery API to boost our website and mobile app’s user experience.
