What is DKIM?
DKIM is a technology that allows an organization to accept responsibility for sending a message by signing it in a way that mailbox providers can confirm. This is accomplished by cryptographic authentication, which verifies that the email was not altered during transit and that it originates from the stated sender’s domain.
Main Features of DKIM
i. Digital Signatures: DKIM employs cryptographic signatures to protect the integrity of email messages. This signature is unique to each email and is based on different aspects of the message.
ii. Public Key Infrastructure: DKIM signs and verifies using a pair of keys (private and public). The sender keeps the private key confidential, but the public key is disclosed in the DNS records.
iii. Message Integrity: Message Integrity: DKIM verifies that the email’s content has not been altered during transit. If even one character changes, the DKIM verification will fail, indicating possible tampering.
iv. Selector: Each DKIM signature includes a selection that helps the recipient’s server discover the proper public key in the DNS records, making the verification process easier.
Working of DKIM
i. Signing Emails: When sending an email, the sending mail server generates a unique DKIM signature with a private key. This signature is appended to the email’s header.
ii. Verification Process: After receiving an email, the recipient’s mail server extracts the sender’s public key from the DNS records associated with the sender’s domain. It then uses the public key to verify the DKIM signature. If the signatures match, it confirms that the email is genuine and has not been altered.
iii. DKIM Records: DKIM stores the public key in DNS TXT records. These records include the DKIM version, the selector (which helps locate the public key), and the actual public key.
Setup of DKIM on OVH
1. Initially, go to OVH’s website and log in.
2. Then, go to “My Products and Services” and click “See all” under domains.
3. Select the domain.
4. Click the DNS Zone tab.
5. Click “Add an entry” and choose CNAME.
6. Fill the following details:
Sub-domain: mail._domainkey (no period at the end).
Target: mail._domainkey.yourserviceprovider.com.
7. Click “Next” and confirm.
8. Repeat the above steps for a second CNAME record.
9. Changes may take up to an hour to apply. So, check after that time.
This secures the emails and helps prevent spoofing.
Benefits of Using DKIM on OVH
1. Email Authentication
DKIM is an important part of email authentication since it allows recipients to verify that emails are truly from the stated sender. This lowers the danger of phishing attacks and email spoofing, which can lead to serious security breaches.
2. Improved Deliverability
Emails signed with DKIM are less likely to be flagged as spam or garbage by recipient servers. This increases the likelihood of authentic emails reaching the inbox instead of being blocked out.
3. Reputation Management
Using DKIM helps firms create a positive reputation with email service providers (ESPs). A high reputation can enhance email delivery rates and ensure that receivers believe the communications.
4. Compliance with Standards
Many email providers, such as Google and Yahoo, demand DKIM for bulk senders to successfully deliver emails. This makes it a crucial part of modern email procedures.
5. Works with other protocols
DKIM is frequently used in concert with other email authentication methods such as SPF (Sender Policy Framework) and DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance) to provide a comprehensive email security approach.
