Supermicro how to update bios – Here’s how we do it

Have a Supermicro computer and thinking how to update bios? We can do that for you.

The BIOS needs to be manually updated. There is no auto-update for BIOS.

We can update the motherboard BIOS firmware remotely. It is done from Supermicro Update Manager that is built into the IPMI interface.

Generally, it is dangerous to update the BIOS. As any mistake will require to rebuild from scratch.

In Supermicro how to update bios?

There are two methods to update the BIOS of the Supermicro computer. One using the remote console and the other using bootable USB. Let’s discuss how we update BIOS.

 

Update Supermicro BIOS using IPMI

To update the BIOS from the management panel. It will prompt for a license key to activate components from the IPMI interface.

Thus the BIOS can be updated from IPMI only if the license key is available.

1. Initially, we log into the panel and click the Maintenance tab. Then we click on BIOS Upload from the menu layout.

2. Then we enter the license key.

3. Now we select the BIOS image to upload that is downloaded. After selecting the file we click the Upload BIOS button.

4. Once the uploading of the image is complete. A screen will display with the existing BIOS date and revision. It also shows the New Date and revision of the new file.

5. Once we confirm the details. We click on Start Upgrade.

6. Once the update process is complete. A window appears to reset the system. On selecting OK it will power cycle and bring the new BIOS online immediately.

If we click cancel we can continue to use the same BIOS. On the next restart, the BIOS will be updated.

 

Supermicro update BIOS from USB

1. First, we create a bootable USB drive using the software tool.

2. Once the formatting is complete. We copy the Supermicro BIOS update files to the USB drive.

3. Now we login to the IPMI interface. And click on Remote control and select Power Control.

4. Then we click on Power Cycle Server.

5. Before that, we connect via a remote console. Once the server starts to boot up we press F11. Thus it takes us to the boot menu.

6. Now we select the appropriate boot device from the list. After some time a FreeDOS Screen appears.

7. Now we select the language and press enter.

8. Then we run the below command

flash.bat BIOS_filename

Once the update is complete. We restart the server for the new BIOS to take effect.

    how much would it cost for you to remote downgrade supermicro h11ssl-1 to run only version 1 to run an epyc 7551 which does not run on revision 2 on my motherboard?
