Zabbix Agentless Monitoring – When and why we use?

by | Mar 7, 2020

Trying to get an idea about Zabbix agentless monitoring? We can help you.

It means monitoring any server without installing the Zabbix agent on that server.

We opt agentless method due to install restrictions on the server or where we need only a few information from Zabbix.

At Bobcares, we get requests regarding Zabbix, as a part of our Server Management Services.

Today, we’ll see how our Support Engineers help our customers regarding agentless monitoring queries.

What is Zabbix Agent?

In simple words, Zabbix is a server monitoring software tool.

This is used to monitor different aspects of server infrastructure like DB monitoring, application monitoring, Network monitoring, etc.

Basically, Zabbix has agent-based and agentless monitoring.

Here, the Zabbix agent is a small software installed to check the performance and collect data.

What is Zabbix agentless monitoring?

On most platforms, Zabbix provides many great features. But it is not possible to install Zabbix in some cases where the server network does not allow any remote installations. Likewise, some servers deny the agent installation due to security reasons too.

In those scenarios, the Zabbix server provides some agentless monitoring methods.

One such scenario is: A server having Nginx, and we need only to monitor the service status. In such a case, there is no need to install agent-based monitoring.

These agentless functions include Network services check, ICMP Ping, remote check, etc.

When and why we opt agentless monitoring?

Recently, one of our customers approached us with a request to suggest to him the best monitoring method.

He mentioned that he only needs to monitor the server status.

He was using the Nginx server as a reverse proxy and wanted to monitor whether this Nginx server is up or not.

So, our Support Engineers suggested him an agentless option for monitoring.

Here, while opting this method, we usually follow the steps below:

Firstly, in Zabbix >> host we add the IP in Agent interfaces.

Zabbix agentless monitoring

Then, link the template.

Finally, in IPMI, we add the username and password.

This way we help our customers in using an agentless monitoring method.
