Zabbix windows agent installation – How we do it

by | Nov 30, 2019

Finding steps for Zabbix Windows agent installation? We can help you.

We require a Zabbix agent in the host server to monitor the alerts.

Here at Bobcares, we often receive requests to install the Zabbix agent as a part of our Server Management Services.

Today, let’s discuss how our Support Engineers install Zabbix Windows agent.

Explore more about Zabbix Agent

We install the Zabbix agent in monitoring hosts to monitor resources and applications.

Zabbix server can actively alert the administrators. Also, has a web interface to manage the alerts.

Agents can perform passive and active checks.

Let’s now discuss how our Support Engineers install the Zabbix Windows agent.

How we install Zabbix Agent on Windows

Recently one of our customers contacted us to install Zabbix Agent in one of his windows servers. There are 2 methods to install the Zabbix agent.

Let’s now go through the steps that our Support Engineers follow to install it for our customers

Manual Zabbix agent installation

Let’s have a brief look into the manual Zabbix agent installation.

1. First, we download the Zabbix agent for the Windows-based on the architecture and hardware used.

2. Then to install the Zabbix agent we open CMD as administrator.

3. We move to the directory where the files are been downloaded. Then, we run the below command:

zabbix_agentd.exe --config zabbix_agentd.conf --install

An installation success message appears.

4. Next, we start the Zabbix agent. For that, we use the command,

zabbix_agentd.exe --start

5. Now we open zabbix_agentd.win.conf file and make changes in the following parameters:

Server=Zabbix_server_IP
ServerActive=Zabbix_server_IP
Hostname=FQDN of windows host

6. After making the changes we save the file.

Zabbix agent installation using MSI package

The simplest method to install a Zabbix agent is using the Zabbix Agent installer MSI package.

1. Initially, our Support Engineers download the agent MSI file.

2. Then we run the file to install the Zabbix agent.

3. A Zabbix agent setup screen appears to configure Zabbix. First, we agree with the Terms and conditions. Then click next.

4. Now we enter the following details.

Hostname: FQDN of your windows host
Zabbix server Name: IP of the Zabbix Server
Agent Port: 10050
Check the remote command box
Active Server: IP of Zabbix Server

5. Then, click next. Now we give the default file location and finish the setup.

6. Then, we check the Zabbix agent service.

Finally, we make the adjustment to automatically start the service even after reboot.

Configure Firewall

The Zabbix agent works from port 10050. So we need to open the port for the Zabbix agent to communicate with the server.

1. Open Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. Now click on Inbound Rules and select New Rule.

2. Here, we add the Port option and select the protocol. Then we add the port 10050.

3. Then, we select Allow the connection option. After that, we select the network type and give a name to the rule.

4. Finally, we check the working using the telnet command.

That’s how we install the Zabbix agent in windows.

After installing we can add Windows host to the Zabbix server.
