Cloudflare Argo Tunnel SSL Certificate | Main Points

by | Apr 5, 2024

Read the article to know some of the key points regarding SSL certificate with Cloudflare Argo Tunnel. At Bobcares, with our Server Management Service, we can handle your issues.

SSL Certificate with Cloudflare Argo Tunnel

With Cloudflare Argo Tunnel, the server connects securely to Cloudflare’s global network using a lightweight agent set up on the server. This agent creates a secure tunnel to the nearest Cloudflare data center. Cloudflare directs incoming traffic through this tunnel to the server, ensuring security and efficiency.

A few important things to know are as follows:

1. SSL/TLS encryption is enabled by default by Cloudflare between the client and its edge servers. This shows that all communication between the client and Cloudflare is encrypted; however, depending on how the server is set up, all communication could not be secured. We refer to this as “Flexible SSL.”

2. Use Cloudflare’s “Full SSL” option if we want end-to-end encryption between the client and the origin server. Cloudflare encrypts communication between the client and its edge servers, as well as between those edge servers and the origin server, using Full SSL. This ensures traffic encryption on the way.

3. We must install an SSL/TLS certificate on the origin server in order to use Cloudflare Argo Tunnel with Full SSL enabled. For this purpose, we can get free “Origin Certificates” from Cloudflare. Cloudflare has signed these certificates, which are good for the domain. The dashboard allows us to create an Origin Certificate, which we can then set up on the server.

4. On the origin server, as an option, we can use self-signed SSL/TLS certificates. Nevertheless, unless we set up Cloudflare to accept self-signed certificates, this can cause the validation issues for customers connecting to the service using Cloudflare Argo Tunnel.

5. If we want to use a certificate from a different provider like Let’s Encrypt, we can upload it along with the private key to Cloudflare’s dashboard. Cloudflare will then apply the custom certificate to encrypt the connection between Cloudflare and the server, ensuring secure data transfer.
