DigitalOcean Kubernetes backup | Guide

Did you know that a key part of managing a Kubernetes cluster is having a backup strategy in place?

According to our experts, a backup strategy helps us recover the cluster in case of data loss or a disaster. DigitalOcean offers a backup feature for Kubernetes clusters, making it easier to create and manage backups.

DigitalOcean Kubernetes backup | Guide

Let’s take a look at how to create a backup for a DigitalOcean Kubernetes cluster:

  1. First, log in to the DigitalOcean account and choose the Kubernetes cluster we want to back up.
  2. Then, click Backups from the left sidebar menu to open the Backups page.
  3. Next, we have to click Create Backup on the Backups page to start the backup process.
  4. At this point, we have to enter a name for the backup. Our experts recommend picking a name that makes it easier to identify the backup later.
  5. Now, click Create Backup to start the backup process. The process may take a few minutes depending on the size of the Kubernetes cluster.
  6. After the backup process is complete, we can verify the backup was created successfully by clicking the Backups tab in the left sidebar. Here, we will be able to find the backup that we just created.

Our experts would like to point out that since DigitalOcean Kubernetes backups are incremental, only changes made since the last backup are included in subsequent backups.

In other words, backups become more efficient and require less storage space over time. We can also schedule backups to occur automatically on a regular basis.

After the backup process is complete, we will get a snapshot of the Kubernetes cluster that can be used to restore the cluster if needed. Furthermore, we can also use the backup to create a new Kubernetes cluster with the same configuration.
