Dynatrace SQL Server: Enabling and management.

by | Jun 4, 2023

Let us take a closer look at how to enable the Dynatrace SQL server monitoring with the assistance of our MSSQL support services at Bobcares.

Dynatrace

Dynatrace SQL Server

It monitors SQL Server databases across all platforms and analyzes database service activity, allowing visibility down to individual MSSQL operations. Dynatrace MS SQL monitoring delivers insights that aid in the identification of SQL performance issues and possible bottlenecks.

Enabling Dynatrace SQL server monitoring

Follow the steps given below to To activate MS SQL monitoring worldwide:

  1. Firstly, navigate to Settings in the Dynatrace menu.
  2. Select Monitoring > Monitored technologies from the menu.
  3. Turn on the MS SQL switch on the Supported technologies tab.

Note that when Dynatrace SQL server monitoring is set worldwide, Dynatrace automatically gathers MS SQL metrics whenever a new host running MS SQL is found in the environment.

We can activate MS SQL monitoring for individual hosts rather than globally. To do so, firstly disable the global MS SQL monitoring setting described above, then we have to navigate to the host settings link towards the top of the page.

Troubleshooting

The MS SQL Server performance counters must be present on the host in order to monitor MS SQL using Dynatrace. They must be accessible to users in the Performance Monitor Users group. This may be verified as follows:

  1. Firstly on the MS SQL host, launch a Command Prompt window.
  2. After that issue the command
    typeperf -q > counters.txt
  3. Examine the contents of counters.txt to ensure the presence of MSSQL* counters.

The counters should be automatically registered with the MS SQL installation. If they aren’t, something is amiss with the MS SQL installation. This step ensures the users have smooth Dynatrace SQL server monitoring.
