Let’s take a look at how our Support Team is ready to help customers with reducing the latency of HLS delivery in MediaLive.

How to reduce the latency of HLS delivery in MediaLive

If you have been facing a delay on the HLS delivery of the AWS Elemental Medial Live channel, our Support Engineers are here to save the day. The delay can be due to a number of reasons, for example, encoding, decoding, player buffers, network conditions, and so on.

reduce the latency of HLS delivery in MediaLive

According to our team of skilled Support Techs, we can potentially reduce the latency by shortening the segment length of the HLS group.

  1. First, we have to open the MediaLive console.
  2. Next, select Channels from the navigation pane and select the channel we want to modify.
  3. Then, select Edit underActions.

  4. After that, we have to select the HLS output group we plan on modifying.
  5. Next, select Manifest and Segments and change the value of Segment Length to 1.
  6. Then, we have to select one output within the HLS group and select GOP Structure.
  7. Here, we will select SECONDS for GOP Size Units and enter 1 for GOP Size.
  8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 for all outputs in the HLS group.
  9. Once we update the outputs, select Update Channel.

Before you proceed with the steps above, it is important to be aware that reducing the segment length can have an impact on the video quality. Moreover, it increases the chances of player buffering events. Our Support Engineers suggest considering the impact on the use case to be on the safe side before shortening the segment length.
