Roundcube spellchecker does not work on Plesk

If you have been having trouble with your Roundcube spellchecker, our Support Engineers have a workaround solution for you. Many of our customers find themselves facing the following error when the Roundcube spellchecker stops working:

An error was encountered on the server. Please try again later.

We will also see the following message in the /var/log/plesk-roundcube/errors file as a result of this error:

PHP Warning: fsockopen(): unable to connect to ssl://spell.roundcube.net:443 (Connection timed out) in /usr/share/psa-roundcube/program/lib/Roundcube/spellchecker/googie.php on line 87

After analyzing the situation, our Support Techs have come to the conclusion that the error is prevalent from Plesk version 18.0.39. By default, Roundcube is disabled Plesk version 18.0.39 onward. Fortunately, our Support Engineers are here with an easy solution.

How to resolve Roundcube spellchecker does not work on Plesk

  1. First, connect to the server through SSH.
  2. Then, install the packages with the commands seen below:

    For Debian based OS:

    # apt-get install aspell aspell-en php-pspell

    For Red Hat-based OS:

    # yum install aspell aspell-en php-pspell
  3. Next, we have to add the following lines to the /usr/share/psa-roundcube/config/config.inc.php file with the help of a text editor like vi editor:
    $config['spellcheck_engine'] = 'pspell';
    $config['spellcheck_languages'] = array('en' => 'English');
  4. After that, restart Apache with the following commands:

    For Debian based OS:

    # service apache2 restart

    For Red Hat-based OS:

    # service httpd restart
