VPN error 800 VPN tunnels failed – Top 5 causes and fixes

by | Oct 12, 2019

VPN is a quick way to ensure a secure connection to the server. However, it often shows errors like VPN error 800: VPN tunnels failed.

Usually, VPN error 800 occurs due to incorrect server details, network or connectivity errors, firewall restrictions, etc.

So, at Bobcares, we often get requests to fix VPN errors, as a part of our VPN Management Services.

Today, let’s see how our Support Engineers fix the VPN error 800.

Why does the VPN tunnel fail?

Virtual Private Network or VPN is a safe, encrypted connection method over a public network.

Basically, VPN provides a secure tunnel between a local client and a remote server over the internet.

Sometimes, the user’s attempts to connect to a VPN fails. Usually, VPN shows codes for each corresponding errors. And this is helpful in easy identification for its causes.

VPN error 800: VPN tunnels failed, is a common error. The error code denotes – ‘Unable to establish the VPN connection’. In short, the VPN client cannot reach the server. A typical error message in Windows server looks like,

VPN error 800: VPN tunnels failed in Windows

Unfortunately, the error code doesn’t describe the reason for it. But, our Dedicated Engineers with expertise in managing server for more than a decade, fix this error for our customers. The potential reasons that lead to this error are:

  • Incorrect server details,
  • Networks errors,
  • Firewall restrictions
  • Router configuration and so on.

How we fix the VPN error 800?

Whenever our customers approach us with this error, we check for the potential reasons. Let’s discuss how our Dedicated Engineers quickly debug it.

1. Server details

The most common reason for VPN error 800 is incorrect server details. That is, the user enters VPN details on the client-side and it doesn’t match with the server-side details.

So, VPN is unable to connect to an invalid server. And this ends up in error 800. Thus, we always ask our customers to double-check the server name, address and other details.

2. Type of VPN

Similarly, mismatch in the VPN type at the server-side and client-side can cause errors.

So, our Support Team checks the type of VPN connection from the Network Connections. We then navigate as Properties >> Security>> Type of VPN.

We select the appropriate type from the drop-down and update it. This depends a lot on the type of VPN server.

3. Network connection errors

VPN always need a valid connection between the client and the server. Any network problems can lead to VPN error 800.

In such cases, we ping the server. If the error is due to some temporary network errors, then retrying the request after a few minutes fixes the error. We also, check if the error is at the client-side error or server-side error.

Nevertheless, we work with network providers to isolate the exact error.

4. Firewall restrictions

VPN uses certain ports for tunneling protocols. If the server firewall restricts those ports, the VPN connection ends in 800 error.

Usually, VPN uses the TCP port 1723 for PPTP and IP port 47. If the protocol is L2TP then the port is 1701. So, we always make sure that the Firewall is not restricting these ports.

5. Router firmware update

Similarly, a new VPN connection may show a VPN 800 error. It indicates that the router firmware needs an update. And this makes the local router compatible with the VPN. If the basic VPN client settings, firewall, etc. are all correct, it’s worth updating Router firmware with the help of local network administrators.
