OpenVPN error 1068 – How we troubleshoot and fix this error?

Why does OpenVPN show error 1068?
Basically, VPN allows us to have a secure connection over the Internet. Where an OpenVPN is a popular open-source software for implementing a VPN.
OpenVPN works on a client-server model. The client initiates the connection to the server. And this establishes the private channel.
But some customers often get errors while trying to access the OpenVPN client. One such error is 1068. The error message on an OpenVPN client appears as,
How we fix the OpenVPN error 1068?
Whenever customers approach us with this error, our Support Engineers first find the reason for this error. Firstly, we check the Windows Event Log. Mostly, it will give the reason that leads to the error.
Let’s check out the possible reasons for this error.
1. Missing or corrupted TAP-Win32 Adapter
Recently, one of our customers approached us with the OpenVPN error 1068. And the reason for this error was with the TAP-Win32 virtual device. OpenVPN requires this driver to run.
So, our Support Engineers update it to fix this error.
2. OpenVPN error 1068 when the dependency service fails to start
The error message displays that the dependency service failed to start. So, first, we check it. And for this, we run services.msc, which loads the Program list.
From here we select the Services. Now, we check the services in the Remote Access Connection Manager. The Dependencies tab lists the services.
For instance, some users prefer dependencies like, Telephony, Remote Procedure Call, etc. We ensure that these services are running.
Also, we check for the Startup type of services. Even if it is automatic we ensure the service is running.
3. The status of the Windows Event Log
Similarly, if the event viewer is not running it can result in error while starting OpenVPN. So we check the status of the Event log in Windows.
For this, we navigate as Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Services >> Windows Event Log.
Here in the Properties, we check the Startup type. We always make it automatic.
Sometimes, even this is automatic, it may no start while booting. In such cases also we should check the permission of the Event Log. And we change the permissions if needed.
