 Add Additional Nginx Directives Plesk: How to?

by | Oct 8, 2022

Let us take a closer look at how to add additional Nginx directives Plesk and how to update multiple domains with the support of our Server Management support services at Bobcares.

Add additional Nginx directives globally on a Plesk server

 add additional nginx directives plesk

Follow the steps given below to add the additional Ngninx directives:

  1. Use SSH to connect to a Plesk server.
  2. Create the directives.conf file in the /etc/nginx/conf.d/ directory by running the following command: # touch /etc/nginx/conf.d/directives.conf.
  3. After that, we have to open the created file with the name: /etc/nginx/conf.d/directives.confin a text editor.

    In this example, we will use the vi editor: # vi /etc/Nginx/conf.d/directives.conf/.

  4. We must include the necessary directives. # cat /etc/Nginx/conf.d/directives.conf, for example:

    proxy_send_timeout 1200s;
    proxy_read_timeout 1200s;
    fastcgi_send_timeout 1200s;
    fastcgi_read_timeout 1200s;
    proxy_buffers 8 16k;
    proxy_buffer_size 32k;
    fastcgi_buffers 8 16k;
    fastcgi_buffer_size 32k;

  5. Save the changes and exit the file.
  6. nginx -t to ensure that the new directives do not break the Nginx configuration.

    nginx: the syntax of the configuration file /etc/nginx/nginx.conf is correct.

    nginx: configuration file /etc/nginx/nginx.conf test is successful.

  7. Reload the Nginx configuration to apply the changes: # Reloading the Nginx service.

Update “Additional Nginx directives” field for multiple domains in Plesk

For security reasons, additional Nginx directives can only be adjusted for new domains via service plan settings. Otherwise, new directives may overwrite existing configurations and break the functionality of websites.

Apply additional Nginx directives

A command-line interface is available for modifying additional Nginx directives for existing domains.

Additional Nginx directives for the domain are available in the vhost Nginx.conf configuration file, which we can find in the /var/www/vhosts/system/example.com/conf. Apply the following steps to update additional Nginx directives for all/several domains:

  1. Use SSH to connect to a Plesk server.
  2. Make a list of the domains and Nginx directives to update: The script will overwrite all existing Nginx directives for these domains. Ascertain that any existing Nginx directives can be safely overwritten.
  3. Make a new file called domains list: # touch domains list.
  4. Add the necessary domains to the newly created file. Each domain should be listed on a separate line, as follows:

    abcd.com abcd.net <code.abcd.org

  5. To add a list of all hosted domains to the file, run this command: # plesk bin site -l > domains_list.

Create a file containing Nginx directives to include in the domains

Make a new file called directive template and save it.  Include the necessary Nginx directives in the file. Make sure that any new Nginx directives do not break the Nginx configuration.

Before adding more Nginx directives, test them on one domain in Plesk at Domains > abcd.com > Apache & Nginx Settings. proxy send timeout 1200s; CONFIG TEXT.

proxy_read_timeout 1200s;
fastcgi_send_timeout 1200s;
fastcgi_read_timeout 1200s;
proxy_buffers 8 16k;
proxy_buffer_size 32k;
fastcgi_buffers 8 16k;
fastcgi_buffer_size 32k;

To apply the changes, run the following command:

# while read -r domain; do install directive template -o root -g nginx -m 600 "/var/www/vhosts/system/$domain/conf/vhost nginx.conf"; plesk sbin httpdmng -reconfigure-domain "$domain" -no-restart.
