How to make subcategories in WordPress?

Categories are very effective for WordPress SEO as they can create an appropriate, semantically sound web structure in addition to organizing the content. We may have already added categories for our WordPress content. In this article, we will show a simple method to add subcategories in WordPress.

There is no requirement that a post is filed under both the parent category and its child category. The post will only appear on the archive pages of the child category if we submit it under the child category rather than the parent category.

The steps to follow include:
  1. Firstly, on the WordPress Dashboard, click on the gear icon on the top right to view the sidebar.
  2. Now open the Categories tab in the Post panel on the right-hand side. We can see the various categories that are already present.
  3. In order to create a new category, simply click the ‘Add New Category’ link.
  4. Now two new boxes will appear under the ‘Add New Category’ option. They are ‘New Category Name’ and ‘Parent Category’. We don’t need to select anything from the Parent Category dropdown for a regular category. Simply click the “Add New Category” button after entering the category’s name.
  5. However, for subcategories, type in the name for the subcategory in the ‘New Category Name’ option.
  6. Then select the category that we want to use as the parent from the ‘Parent Category’ drop-down list.
  7. Finally, click the ‘Add New Category’ button to complete the process.

This is how to make subcategories in WordPress. To add child categories, we may alternatively go to Posts » Categories. All we have to do is type the name of the child category and choose the parent category from the drop-down menu.
