We recently assisted a client with this issue. In July 2026, Bobcares performed a planned physical-to-virtual (P2V) migration for the client to move the client’s old physical server to a VM.

The server still needed to run critical applications. However, the old hardware made it more difficult to manage.

The migration team then prepared the virtual environment and executed the P2V migration. Once this was complete, they configured the virtual machine OS and the applications and storage, as well as the network.

The last step was to check the migrated environment and only then make the migrated virtual machine the production environment.

The migration followed these main steps:

  1. Assessed the existing server and planned the migration.
  2. Took and verified backups.
  3. Used a P2V converter.
  4. Set up the virtual machine.
  5. Configured network and storage.
  6. Checked services and applications.
