The cPanel AutoSSL not working in some older versions of the software, which can prevent SSL certifications from being updated automatically. We’ll examine a solution to this problem in this article.

Fix the cPanel AutoSSL not working issue

Some of the reasons that prevent the cPanel AutoSSL not working are the following:

  1. The domain doesn’t resolve to a server.
  2. Unable to retrieve an AutoSSL certificate.
  3. AutoSSL verification script is not able to make a temporary file for the domain.
  4. Missing record for the mail.domain.com DNS record.
  5. Error in old versions of cPanel.
  6. An issue with the AutoSSL Cron job.

Let’s look into some of the methods to fix this issue.

Methods to fix the cPanel AutoSSL not working issue

  1. Ensure that the domain points to the server and examines redirects as well.
  2. When the AutoSSL procedure is stopped and unable to get a valid AutoSSL certificate, we may occasionally see the term “processing,” which in some situations might take minutes (normal) or even hours. The AutoSSL/SSL ordering procedure in cPanel and WHM functions as follows: the cPanel system will automatically stop trying to get a certificate after 1 day (86400 seconds), therefore if it hasn’t been fully issued within 24 hours, it will remove from the autossl queue. Then the first thing to do when AutoSSL stops operating is to look through the autossl logs. We can manually run the following script to see what’s happening and process the SSL. It runs every 5 minutes.
    /usr/local/cpanel/bin/autossl_check_cpstore_queue

This script will attempt to initiate a queue run for the pending autossl requests after it has been executed.

  3. If the issue is caused when the AutoSSL verification script is not able to create a temporary file for the domain, then try to assign 755 permissions and the correct owner to the public_html directory. Also, replace user.user with the real cPanel user for that website.
    chmod 755 /home/user/public_html -v

    chown user.user /home/user/public_html/ -R
  4. Simply add a record to the mail.domain.com DNS record to correct the issue.
  5. Due to a bug in outdated versions of cPanel, Cron jobs for AutoSSL stop functioning. The likelihood is that we need to upgrade the cPanel server if we’re experiencing this issue. So as soon as we can, update cPanel to the most recent stable version.
  6. Unless there is a problem, cPanel creates a cron job for SSL creation automatically. We must reset the AutoSSL cron in WHM if it is not already operating. Deactivate AutoSSL and activate it again to fix the cron job.
