How to enable two-factor authentication for WHM

The two-factor authentication function allows us to configure a security measure for cPanel and WHM’s login interface. Furthermore, this feature requires two forms of authentication including a password and a security code. We get the security code via our smartphone.

According to our Support Techs, we can easily enable the 2FA feature on the server by setting the toggle to on. However, only the root user can enable or disable 2FA. After enabling 2FA, we also have to set the Issue value as seen below:

1. First, head to the Settings tab.
2. Then, enter the value or name we want to appear in the authentication app in the Issuer setting.
3. Click Save.

We can enable 2FA on a user account with ease. First, log in as a user to the cPanel interface and head to cPanel > Home > Security > Two-Factor Authentication.

Alternatively, we can call API functions and access 2FA functionality.

In order to set up 2FA for a root account, we have to follow these steps:

1. First, select Set Up Two-Factor Authentication.
2. Then, link the cPanel account with the 2FA app as seen below:
   • Scan the QR code with the app to automatically create the link.
   • Enter the Account and Key information in the app to create the link manually.
3. Next, retrieve the 6 digit code from the 2FA app and enter it in the Security Code text box.
4. Finally, click Configure Two-Factor Authentication.
