Hyper-V failed to resize the virtual disk – How we fix it!

How to resize virtual disk in Hyper-V

First, let’s discuss how our Support Engineers resize the virtual disk in Hyper-v for our customers

1) We open the Hyper v manager. Then we turn off the virtual machine.

2) Now we open the virtual machine properties.

3) In the left pane, under the SCSCI controller, we select the hard drive.

4) Under virtual hard disk click on Edit.

5) Now a window opens, then we select the Expand button. Then click Next.

6) In the configure disk, it will show the current disk size. In the New size, we enter the new size for the disk. Then click Next.

7) We verify the details in the summary and finally click on Finish.

8) Next, we turn on the virtual machine and login to the VM.

9) We open Disk Management. The recently added disk space will be shown an un-allocated disk.

10) Then we select the disk. Right-click on the volume and select Extend Volume.

11) Finally, the additional space is added.

 

Common errors and how we fix Hyper-V failed to resize the virtual disk

Recently one of our customers contacted us saying that the resize option was grey-listed. Let’s now discuss how our Support Engineers resolved the error for our customers.

 

1. The virtual machine is turned on

The reason for the options to grey-out is that the virtual machine is still running. To resize the virtual disk we need to turn it off.

If the virtual disk is under the IDE controller, we need to shut down the system before resizing. The virtual disk is under the SCSCI controller and we can resize online as well.

Thus, our Support Engineers turned off the virtual machine. Then we resized the virtual disk by following the above steps.

This way, we helped our customers resolve it.

 

2. Checkpoint present

Recently another customer contacted us saying that he is unable to resize the virtual disk. Let’s discuss how our Support Engineers resolve the error for our customers.

On analyzing the virtual machine in Hyper V manager we found that the checkpoint was present for the virtual machine.

The checkpoint file merges with the virtual machine configuration file. Thus, if the checkpoint is present, we delete the checkpoint.

Then we proceed with the resize process.

In this case, we cannot use checkpoints as a backup. Then we need to take a snapshot of the VM if a backup is required for the process.

 

3. Dynamic expanding in Hyper-V

If the Dynamic-expanding of the server is kept, the resize of the virtual machine is not required. If the disk is not resizing automatically, the possible reason could be disk reaching the limit.

So if we reach the limit, the option is to compact the virtual disk.
