How to use transformations in AWS DMS?

We can use transformations in AWS DMS to modify a schema, table, or column.

Here, at Bobcares, we assist our customers with several AWS queries as part of our AWS Support Services.

Today, we will see how to use transformations in AWS Database Migration Service.

 

Use transformations in AWS DMS

With transformations, we can rename, add, replace, or remove a prefix or suffix for a table, or change the table name to uppercase or lowercase.

We can also define the transformation rules by using the AWS CLI Interface or API, or by using the AWS DMS console.

To avoid errors while running AWS CLI commands, we make sure to use the most recent version of the AWS CLI.

Moving ahead, let us see how our Support Techs perform these tasks.

1. Initially, we open the AWS DMS console and then select Database migration tasks from the navigation pane.

2. Then we select Create task.

3. Here, we can enter the details for Task configuration and Task settings.

4. Select Enable CloudWatch logs.

5. From the Table mappings section, we select Guided UI.

6. We expand the Selection rules section, and then select Add a new selection rule.

7. After that, we enter a Schema and Table name.

8. From Action, select Include or Exclude.

It is possible to add multiple selection rules. To do so, we select Add new selection rule and then enter the details for the selection rule.

We require at least one selection rule to use transformations.

9. Now, we expand the Transformation rules section to Add a new transformation rule.

10. And then we select a Target by selecting Schema, Table, or Column.

11. From Action, select one of the following:

Rename to
Remove column
Make lowercase
Make uppercase
Add prefix
Remove prefix
Replace prefix
Add suffix
Remove suffix
Replace suffix

12. Later we select, Add a new transformation rule to save the transformation rule.

13. Finally, we go ahead with, Create task.

In addition, we can add transformations to a task that already exists. For that, first, we select Database migration tasks from the navigation pane.

Then we select the task > Actions > Modify.

From the Table mappings section, we expand Selection rules and then select Add new selection rule.

Marketing

Marketing cookies are used to track visitors across websites. The intention is to display ads that are relevant and engaging for the individual user and thereby more valuable for publishers and third party advertisers.

IDE - Used by Google DoubleClick to register and report the website user's actions after viewing or clicking one of the advertiser's ads with the purpose of measuring the efficacy of an ad and to present targeted ads to the user.

test_cookie - Used to check if the user's browser supports cookies.

1P_JAR - Google cookie. These cookies are used to collect website statistics and track conversion rates.

NID - Registers a unique ID that identifies a returning user's device. The ID is used for serving ads that are most relevant to the user.

DV - Google ad personalisation
